Hack The Box Discord Bans and Community Rules

Written by Ryan Gordon

The Hack The Box Discord was created to be a space where infosec professionals, amateur hackers, security engineers, and enthusiasts can connect and learn. To ensure a smooth operation, HTB's Discord Server is moderated and enforces strict rules. Failing to abide by these rules may result in a warning, mute, kick, or ban.

Please note that bans on the Hack The Box Discord that pass a certain degree of severity are replicated to HTB Labs. This means that if you are banned from the Discord server, you will not be able to use HTB Labs or any other product of Hack The Box until you successfully appeal the ban by reaching out to the Support team.

HTB General Rules

You must always follow the rules of HTB Labs. These are the basic guidelines for using Hack The Box products in general. They must be abided by across the Hack The Box product suite. You must not break or encourage anyone else to break any of the following rules:

  1. Stick to authorized targets: You must not try to hack anything apart from the designated targets in the Hack The Box Network. Limit all your curiosity strictly to the IP or the entry point provided to you.

  2. Do not hack unintended machines: You must not hack machines apart from the intended ones. If you accidentally attempt to hack gateways or other nodes on the Hack The Box VPN (10.10.10.0/24) and succeed, you must not cause any damage and must inform the Support team as soon as possible.

  3. No Denial of Service (DoS): Any form of DoS attack is strictly forbidden. There is no reason to use any form of DoS on any machine inside or outside of the Hack The Box private network. If you accidentally perform such an attack, you must let the Support team know immediately.

  4. Do not hack other members: You must not try to hack other members. The network prohibits direct communication between two member systems. Attacking or connecting to another member's client is strictly prohibited.

  5. Do not use production PCs: You should not use your production PC to connect to the Hack The Box private network. We strongly recommend building a virtual machine (VM) or using a dedicated physical system for this purpose. The community is filled with enthusiasts who have the tools to hack systems; no matter how secure you think you are, you are likely to fail. We do not hold any responsibility for damage, theft, or loss of personal data, though we will cooperate fully with authorities in such events.

  6. Streaming and publishing content: You can only upload, stream videos, and publish solutions for retired content of Hack The Box or HTB Free Academy modules. Specifically, this includes:

    • Retired Machines

    • Retired Challenges

    • Retired Sherlocks

    • Starting Point Machines

    • Tier 0 Academy Modules

    • Note: Streaming or publishing solutions for any Hack The Box content not explicitly mentioned in this list is a violation of our User Agreement. Legal actions will be taken against the content and the owner if the User Agreement is violated.

  7. Do not spoil content: You must not share how you hacked specific machines with other members. This includes sharing the invite code generation process and the solutions to all active challenges.

HTB Discord Rules

In addition to the standard Hack The Box platform rules, HTB's Discord Server has its own specific set of rules:

  1. Do not be a troll: Behavior categorized as trolling, disruptive, or toxic within any channel is unacceptable. This includes giving fake advice or posting potentially dangerous commands. You are here to have fun, discuss Hack The Box offers, exchange ideas, and learn, not to offend or be offended.

  2. Keep everything "Safe For Work": You must not post adult material, suggestive material, or material with strong political or religious character. If you are in doubt, do not post it. Assume channels have children as young as 13 and parents reading messages.

  3. Be respectful of differences: You must not use hateful, disrespectful, or offensive language directed toward people's differences. This includes the LGBT+ community, religious or political beliefs, hobbies, physical disabilities, or mental disabilities.

  4. Keep it legal: You must not request, suggest, perform, promote, or shape discussions around illegal activities. We follow the Discord Terms of Service and the Hack The Box User Agreement. If you are in doubt, ask a Community Administrator before posting.

  5. Keep it English: Unless otherwise dictated by the specific channel rules, you must keep all communication in English.

  6. Do not impersonate other members: Impersonating other users is illegal in real life and is strictly forbidden on this server.

  7. Do not advertise: Any advertisement of other Discord servers, personal businesses, or communities that financially benefit the author must be approved by an Administrator first. If you are unsure if something constitutes an advertisement, consult with a Staff member first.

  8. Do not DM without permission: You must not direct message (DM) people without their prior permission. This includes asking for hints to solve a Machine or a Challenge to avoid spoiling content for others. You may privately message a Moderator or an Administrator without asking, but do not ask them for help with content unless invited to do so.

  9. Follow the moderating team's direction: The Moderators and Administrators are here to ensure a safe, toxic-free environment aligned with Hack The Box values. It may sometimes be necessary for a moderating team member to step in and direct the conversation to a different topic.

  10. Use readable names: Usernames and nicknames must be readable, taggable, and non-disturbing. Names consisting only of non-ASCII symbols, zalgo-variations, unicode "art," or names written primarily with non-English letters (like Russian or Arabic) will not be tolerated.

  11. No ban evasion: You must not attempt to bypass a ban by creating an alternate account. If an alt account is discovered, it will be banned upon identification, and Moderators, Administrators, or Staff will extend the original ban.

Appealing a Ban

While the rules above are extensive, they are not exhaustive. Punitive action is taken at the sole discretion of the Discord Administration and Moderation teams. They use their best judgment to assess situations, and that judgment is generally final.

If you feel there has been a mistake or an extenuating circumstance regarding your ban, you can submit a formal appeal.

  • How to Appeal: Send an email to [email protected] to ask for a ban appeal.

  • Review Timeframe: Please allow a period of no less than two business days for the moderation team to review your request.
