Key Competencies: Goes far beyond basic prompt injection to cover adversarial ML, data poisoning, evasion attacks, LLM output exploitation, and AI privacy breaches using live, realistic target environments.
Subscription
To unlock the desired role path, check the Academy Subscriptions for available options and their perks. If you want to take an exam, consider getting an Annual subscription, which provides access to all modules up to a certain tier (depending on the subscription) and includes an exam voucher. Alternatively, you can opt for a Monthly subscription, where you'll need to unlock each module individually and purchase the voucher separately.
To be eligible to sit for an exam, you must achieve 100% completion in the chosen role path and have an exam voucher.
The Exam Process
Starting the Exam
Once you have completed 100% of the path and have a valid voucher, you can start the exam by heading to the certificates page and choosing your exam.
Step-by-Step Instructions to Begin:
Access the Exam Dashboard: Navigate to the Certificates page.
Select Your Certification Target: Locate your specific unlocked track card (such as Penetration Testing for the HTB CPTS) and click on your target exam tile. The tile will show an 'Exam ready to take' message.
Initialize the Verification Modal: Click the green button labeled Start Exam. A mandatory confirmation dialog box will pop up stating that triggering this action instantly consumes one exam attempt.
Understand Your Timeline Constraints: Depending on your specific track tier, your lab environment access and report submission window vary. When you enter the exam, you will see the message "By entering the exam, one (1) attempt will be consumed. You will have X days to complete the exam and upload the report." Please keep in mind the lab deadline and don't forget to submit the exam report.
Connecting to the Exam VPN
Your live exam runs inside an isolated lab network. As soon as you click the final confirmation, the system starts counting down your active days uninterrupted.
Connection Rules (Strict Single-Route Policy): You can interact with your target environment via two separate connection models: downloading a local VPN configuration pack to use with your virtual machine or spawning an in-browser Pwnbox instance.
Avoid Connection Routing Drops: You must use only one connection route at a time. Attempting to connect via a local OpenVPN configuration package while simultaneously running an active browser Pwnbox will drop your active sessions.
Using the Pwnbox
If you prefer to complete your exam without setting up a local virtual machine, you can run a Pwnbox desktop directly inside your web browser canvas.
Selecting Your Infrastructure Regional Location: Locate the connection widget box, select your preferred geographic region from the dropdown menu, and choose your VPN server.
Spawning the Environment: Click the green button labeled Start Pwnbox to boot your virtual system.
Lifespan Constraints: An active browser instance stays online for a maximum continuous duration of 4 days. This instance's runtime cannot be extended with custom timer additions. Once the 4-day mark hits, the system automatically wipes the current container environment. To continue working, you must deploy a fresh instance from the target system dashboard.
Note: Please know that any data or files related to your exam that you store in Pwnbox will be lost when its lifespan runs out.
Using the VPN file
If you choose not to use the browser-based Pwnbox, you can connect your local virtual machine directly to the target environment using our provided VPN configuration file.
You can find more information on troubleshooting VPN connections in this article:
Taking the Exam
Once you are connected to the VPN, you can start the exam instance. It will spawn on the VPN server you chose and will give back an entry point. This will be your first step into the exam, and it will show on the top right panel.
You can reset or stop the instance at any time, and you can add more time to it once it drops below 100 Minutes(1H:40M).
Core Prerequisites to Secure an Exam Pass
To satisfy the platform's automatic certification requirements, you must meet two core milestones before your final deadline:
Reach the Minimum Point Threshold: You must collect target system flags to meet the specific point requirements of your exam (for instance, scoring at least 70 out of 100 points on intermediate paths).
Submit Professional Documentation: You must compile a detailed, commercial-grade penetration testing report in English that clearly maps out your attack methodology and remediation steps.
Submitting the report
To finalize your examination grading process, you must upload your formal technical documentation packet directly through the Step 4 - Upload report dashboard workspace module. You can either use the official downloadable report template included in your exam or the Sysreptor's HTB template system when preparing your report.
Strict Non-Reversibility Rule: Clicking the final submission button instantly terminates your live exam laboratory network connection and formally closes your examination window. Once committed, your file cannot be changed, modified, or swapped.
Mandatory File Specifics by Certification Exam:
CPTS, CWES, CAPE, and CDSA Exam: You must upload your report as an unencrypted PDF document or compressed ZIP archive. The file must not contain any password protection and must have a maximum size limit of 20MB.
CWEE Exam Only: Your report must be formatted as raw Markdown files (
.md) packed neatly inside a compressed ZIP archive using the specific password parameters provided during the exam instructions. The file must have a maximum size limit of 20MB.Global Language Standard: The platform does not accept documentation submissions outside of the official exam web dashboard. Furthermore, all reports must be composed entirely in the English language.
In case of failure to get the needed points, you will still need to submit a report in order to get a second attempt. You won't be eligible for a second attempt if you did not submit a report for the first one.
Getting the results
The review process takes up to 20 business days, and the results will be sent to you via email. In case you fail the first attempt, you can start a second attempt right away and use the feedback to improve.
You can view your exam history and feedback on the History tab of the exam.
You have 14 days to start the second attempt from the day you get the feedback. In case you don't, you will lose the second attempt.
Please note that users cannot start another exam while an examination is under review, or in progress in general. If you have more than one exam voucher, please plan your time accordingly keeping in mind the exam voucher expiry date.
Exam Deadlines
Once you start the exam, a timer will start counting towards the end of the exam period. The following are the deadlines for each exam:

To help clarify exactly what is and isn't permitted during your exam, here is a quick summary based on our compliance guidelines:
Allowed Usage
Local reference or debugging: Using AI to ask how a Linux command works or to check the syntax for a script is permitted (there is no prohibition for this in our text).
Prohibited Usage
Leaking exam data: Pasting raw exam targets or code into public AI models violates Section 4.6 & Section 5.4 (Confidentiality / NDA).
Report generation: Having AI write or generate your entire exam report violates Section 4.2 (Not your own work).
Automated solving: Using autonomous AI agents to solve machines for you violates Section 4.2 & 4.7 (Cheating / Unauthorized assistance).
If you have any further questions about these policies or need clarification on a specific use case before you proceed, please refer to the Certification Exams' Terms of Service, as that may help clear the air a bit more.
If you run into any issues with the exam, please reach out to the support team via the chat bubble. Note that the support team can't give any hints or guidance on the actual exam tasks.
